Q: How long have you been involved with the Haldeman Community?
I was invited to join the board about six years ago by RoseMary [Johnson] and James Williams, who was a VISTA worker at the Center.
Q: How long have you been a board member of the Haldeman Community Center?
I am so impressed by the dedication and commitment of time, energy, and love displayed by the Haldeman elders, and by Dr. Joy Gritton and all the volunteers. They are helping the kids understand the community’s history, connect to the elders and unearth their own creativity and intellectual curiosity.
Q: Please write a brief summary of the Haldeman Community Center for those who are unfamiliar with it and the work they do.
The Haldeman Center also provides a valuable historical and contemporary community touchstone – the holiday parties, reunions, performances, work groups – are helping Haldeman reclaim its past and build a more hopeful future. The volunteers and elders are nurturing a sense of place, an appreciation that the residents might have lost or never had – and they will not lost that, and they will take the tools they not are getting with them forever.
